Doomsday Clock Stays This Year At 90 Seconds To Midnight

AI threats keep us near global catastrophe.

This year, the Doomsday Clock, which is a sign of how close the global disaster, is still at the same time, ninety seconds before midnight. The same thing happened the year before when the clock reached its most dangerous point in history.

According to a report published by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group of specialists responsible for adjusting the clock annually, the world is still confronted with significant dangers, including war, climate change, and new technology. They cautioned that the situation is not stable or safe and that people should not be complacent about it. The time before midnight is 90 seconds.

The clock was designed by the artist Martyl Langsdorf in 1947 to be shown on the cover of Bulletin magazine. Because it appeared to be a good choice, she went with seven minutes to midnight. Since then, the clock has been adjusted forward or backward, depending on the world’s current condition of affairs. Before 2018, the closest it ever got to midnight was two minutes on two separate occasions: in 1953 and 2018.

  • The countries that possess nuclear weapons are working to improve their arsenals, which is raising the likelihood of a nuclear conflict starting.

  • In 2023, the earth experienced its hottest year, and climate change is causing increased floods, fires, and other calamities.

  • The levels of action that are being taken to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions are insufficient.

  • Biological and biotechnological research has the potential to not only aid in preventing diseases but also to give rise to new diseases.

Increasing the amount of control and regulation applied to these industries is necessary. Although advancements in artificial intelligence have the potential to bring about many advantages, they may also bring difficulties and risks. This technology must be utilized in a manner that is more responsible and ethical.

It was stated in the Bulletin that the clock is a method of bringing attention to these issues and encouraging people to take action. They expressed optimism that they would be able to move the clock away from midnight at the beginning of the following year and make the globe a more secure place.
